What are meta tags?

Meta tags are HTML elements in your page's <head> that provide metadata about your page to search engines and social media platforms. The most important ones for SEO and social sharing are:

  • title — The page title shown in search results and browser tabs
  • meta description — The snippet shown below your title in search results
  • og:title, og:description, og:image — Control how your link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack
  • twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:image — Control how your link looks on Twitter/X

Why do Open Graph images matter?

OG images give people a visual introduction to your page. Without an og:image, platforms may choose an unrelated image or show a text-only preview. Use a relevant image and descriptive title to make your content recognizable in feeds and messaging apps.

Meta tag best practices

  • Write a concise, descriptive title. Search engines may shorten or rewrite it for the result.
  • Write a unique description that summarizes the page. Snippet length varies by device and query.
  • Start with 1200×630 pixels for large social previews, and check cropping on your target platforms.
  • Always use absolute URLs for og:image (relative paths won't work)
  • Set twitter:card to summary_large_image for the best Twitter/X display
